New pope elected

After some confusion - over the colour of the smoke, the lack of bells, the wrong bells, then the right bells - the throngs of people outside the Vatican, and millions of viewers around the world, learned that a new pope had been chosen. Born in Bavaria in 1927, Joseph Ratzinger was made Cardinal in 1977 and now after two days of secret voting he becomes Pope Benedict XVI. He is viewed as 'hard line' by many observers.
