Happy New Year - celebrations in London 00:00 01/01/2006
London put on a spectacular 12 minute display of fireworks around the London Eye. There were muted celebrations in Red Square in Moscow, Russia. Sydney started the ball rolling with a fireworks spectacular in Sydney Harbour and using the famous Sydney Bridge as its backdrop. TV coverage of the worldwide celebrations were generally poor with only brief glimps of new year festivities in Beijing, China and in Germany's Berlin. CCTV-9 showed a 5 minute speech from President Hu Jintao who looked forward to a prosperous new year and to further peaceful resolution between China and Taiwan. The year did not end peacefully for all, however. In Gaza there were explosions of a different kind when a UN building was bombed. There are few details at this time though there are no reported deaths.
