Bradley Higgins, the first British rider to win the Tour de France, started off proceedings at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
After a countdown Higgins stepped onto the stage and rung a large bell sending a balloon into the sky.
A choir then began to sing a medley including the well known hymn Oh Jerusalem as an audience of 80,000 began to watch a performance that was to last nearly three hours.
