Hurricane Ike bound for Texas


Hurricane Ike currently a category 2 storm may build to a category 3 and sweep into Texas late Friday or early Saturday forecasters predict. Winds exceeding 200 km/h are expected and already evacuation plans are in place and many residents are boarding up properties [BBC / CNN].

The storm has already brought widespread devastation to many parts of the Caribbean. More than 80% homes were damaged in the Turks and Caicos Islands after hurricane Ike hit as a category 4 at the weekend. HMS Iron Duke is moored off the coast and continues to provide assistance. Cuba was also badly hit with many historic buildings badly damaged. However there were few deaths reported in Cuba. The evacuation of over 1 million people saved many lives and only four were killed according to state media [BBC].
