5.1 Quake hits California
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has hit Southern California, 130 km [80 miles] northwest of Los Angeles. No injuries or major damage has yet been reported. The earthquake struck at 12:18 PDT [19:18 UTC/GMT] 20 km [13 miles]east of Maricopa, and 40 km [25 miles] south-southwest of Bakersfield. Exact position - 35.027°N, 119.178°W . The hypocental depth was estimated to be 11 km [7 miles] by the USGS [United States Geological Survey]. By strange coincidence, Volcano, a disaster tale in which the citizens of Los Angeles are thrown into blind panic when an erupting volcano is discovered beneath the city, is about to air on the ITV1 channel in the UK.
